Shooting Video

  • Shot types
  • AFI Shot types
  • Tips from http://mindymcadams.com/tojou/2008/17-video-tips-learned-on-the-fly/
    • SHOOT TO EDIT (in other words, always remember to turn off your camera after every shot so capturing the video and working with it will be easier).
    • STORY MATTERS.
    • “Spraying video” is not smart storytelling. (when you take a camera out and just record everything, cutting it together with voiceovers)
    • Video involves compressing time in pictures.
    • As with still photos, composition matters.
    • If you are going to tell a story in 90 seconds, you cannot have a huge cast of characters.
    • Close-ups, close-ups, close-ups.
    • Long shots set the scene.
    • Let the camera run long, before and after the shot, so that you have handles of time for editing.
    • You’re gonna need 10-12 shots per one minute of finished video.
    • Watch out for your camera reflection in windows, and for background audio such as traffic.
    • Don't move the camera too much.
    • Hold your camera steady.

Questions to ask when taking a photo or shooting video?

  • What story am I telling?
  • What/Who is the main focus of the shot?
  • Where do I want the focus be in the frame?
  • Do any objects, body parts or shadows appear cut off?
  • Are there any distractions in the background or foreground?
  • How is the subject lit?
  • Is the frame filled?
  • From what other perspectives could I capture this subject?
  • How am I going to hold the camera? Portrait? Landscape? Angle?
